English 9: Writing to Discover
Yearlong High School Course, A-G Aligned
Recommended Ages 13 - 15
This yearlong English 9 course invites students into a rich exploration of literature and writing in a supportive environment. I believe that smaller classes allow for individualized attention, personalized feedback, and quality instruction. For this reason, enrollment in this class will be restricted to 16 students, which helps foster an environment of trust and connection that many young writers need. We’ll also make room for engaging, enjoyable activities—because learning is most meaningful when it’s also fun.
Using a blend of classic and contemporary readings—including historical writings, speeches, and poetry—students will engage with texts that will prompt real reflection and discussions. Key concepts in literary and rhetorical analysis will be introduced to help students gain a deeper understanding of their reading as well as write with greater purpose.
Along the way, we will take a close look at plenty of mentor texts to learn by example. Most importantly, we will create a safe, supportive environment where students engage in shared writing experiences, including in-class modeling and group practice, before crafting their first drafts at home. This class emphasizes the writing process from first to final draft. Through revision, editing, and proofreading, students will build confidence in their ability to craft clear, meaningful writing. By the end of the year, they will have produced narrative, argumentative, and informative essays as well as poetic works that they can be proud of.
Assignments will be posted, submitted, and graded through Google Classroom, which creates a space where students can receive feedback and reach out with any writing questions. Regular access to a computer, laptop, or similar device that can access the internet and upload weekly assignments is required. Students should expect approximately three hours of homework per week. This course is designed to align with the A–G standards outlined by Blue Ridge Academy and strives to meet the A-G requirements of most schools. However, it has not been submitted for official UC A–G approval. Families should consult with their respective schools or charter programs to determine if this course meets their credit requirements. For students not enrolled in a charter school with an A–G English 9 guide, it is advisable to maintain coursework records, including syllabi, assignments, and evaluations. This documentation can support college applications, especially for institutions that consider comprehensive reviews. For more information, please contact leilani.weigand@gmail.com.
